Kate Moss perfume

We get LOADS of emails from retailers listed in our shopping directory, including news about new products. Only the most noteworthy information makes it through to our news articles.

Occasionally, I read emails with really bizarre content. I thought you’d enjoy one example in particular, received a few days ago from Perfume Point. The email was to let us know that Kate Moss’s new perfume is now in stock and being sold by them at the lowest price in the UK.  But I challenge you to make sense of how the fragrance was described:

“The new Kate Moss fragrance is a sophisticated, feminine, wild and an unforgettable fragrance. A mix of elegant and risque with smoky rose and black undertones and a vintage English feel, a true to life portrait of Kate Moss. The fragrance is glamorous, alluring, but recalls a seductive temptress with a silent mystery.”

After reading this nonsense five times, I still felt none the wiser.

So I emailed back to ask “Now can you tell me what it actually smells like, please?” - complete with smiley face, to offset my sarcasm.

I received a very prompt and polite reply, explaining that “It is a dark musky scent. I tend to like floral fragrances, but was surprised that this appealled to me”.

A dark musky scent. Now that I can understand. Much better than the drivel that Coty, Inc (who make the perfume) are evidently trotting out to retailers across the world.

Mrs Consumer and I happened to find ourselves passing a perfume shop yesterday. Out of curiousity, we popped in and asked them to spray some Kate Moss perfume on a smelly stick thing. I’m pleased to confirm that it does indeed have a dark, musky scent. And we both thought it was very pleasant, too. I can also confirm that neither of us found words like “unforgettable”, “risque”, “English vintage feel”, “seductive temptress” or “silent mystery” popping into our minds. Odd, that.

I also read this week that Kate Moss has a team of five working on the various aspects of her career. Perhaps a plain English copywriting editor wouldn’t go amiss if she felt like adding a sixth?
