Spellcheck + proof read! Twice!
1 Comment October 14, 2007 / Posted in ShoppingI tend to get quite annoyed with websites that make silly spelling mistakes.
Indeed, correct spelling is a factor we take into account when deciding whether to include sites in our shopping directory. I regard it as an easy to spot indicator of attention to detail, a discipline that’s obviously very important in other areas of site design, like how personal information is processed.
It’s not as if spelling is particularly hard to get right – after all, virtually all of the applications that we web folks rely upon offer integrated spell checking facilities.
Admittedly, it can sometimes be quite hard finding where to change the spellchecker’s default dictionary from English (US) to English (UK), but a little digging around usually unearths the relevant options settings. We’re all prone to the odd slip up, too, which is just the way it goes.
All of which said, I was really tickled to see the following text in a banner that was put up after England’s rugby world cup win over France yesterday:
![]()
This was uploaded by our friends at The Gift Experience – an online gift shop – to promote a 10% discount today, Sunday. Not only couldn’t they spell “celebrate”, they couldn’t even spell “England”!
This is extremely uncharacteristic of them, so I can only conclude that the banner must have been created under the influence of alcohol, following England’s win! So this one’s chalked up as a chuckle, rather than a tut tut!
Incidentally, we already have a discount code for their site that will give you 10% off (excluding experience days) until the end of this month: TGE123
Here’s hoping their heads aren’t too sore today, that’s if they’ve even surfaced yet. :)
Goodness knows what we’ll see from them if England win next weekend…

Well Captain,
What do I say!
What a plonker I am!!!!!!
You are Correct, my wife came up with the idea late last night! too much wine by then especially after the match.!!!!!!
My drunken typing has been fixed now.
But at least it made you chuckle. If they win next week I better be more careful!!
My typing and spelling are carp! at the best of times when sober!!
Thanks for spotting it before I looked tooooo stupid.
