Available to existing and new customers, British Gas EnergySmart / Energy Smart is a FREE add-on service that aims to help customers save money and have better control over their utility bills.

British Gas EnergySmart / Energy Smart is available with many (but not all) of the utility supplier’s gas and electricity tariffs, including dual fuel and single fuel price plans.

Benefits are delivered through a combination of online services and a free electricity usage monitor. Customers using EnergySmart will need to provide monthly meter readings online or by text message and manage their accounts online.

In return, the service shows actual energy usage on a monthly basis via an online Consumption Hub. Gas and electricity bills are also produced and paid monthly rather than quarterly, so that customers can see exactly what they’re using and paying for.

It’s estimated that signing up for EnergySmart / Energy Smart could help an average household to save up to £110. This assumes that customers may be able to achieve up to a 12% reduction in consumption from average levels of 20,500 kWh for gas and 3,300 kWh for electricity.

On top of that, customers who sign up for EnergySmart / Energy Smart at the same as switching to British Gas will receive an extra £20 discount per fuel after 12 months – making total estimated savings in the first year of up to £150.

At present, EnergySmart is available on dual fuel tariffs including British Gas OnlineSaver, Standard, Track and Save 2011 and Zero Carbon. It’s also available with the gas only OnlineSaver and Standard tariffs and electricity only OnlineSaver, Standard and Future Energy tariffs.

You can get a quote for switching to any of the British Gas EnergySmart-compatible price plans by entering your postcode and some other basic information about your current utility supplier and price plan. If you access to have your actual or estimated current usage, you can enter that during the quotation process. Alternatively, the quotes can use estimated consumption figures based on how many bedrooms there are in your home.

Existing British Gas customers can simply apply online to have the EnergySmart service added to their current tariff.
